How Should You Clean Your Drain?
Step 1: Remove the stopper. For a regular drop stopper, you can simply twist off the cap and remove the screw. If you have a levered bathtub stopper, you will need to remove the overflow plate as well as the stopper. For push stoppers, you may be able to hold onto the base while unscrewing the stopper. Once the stopper is removed, you will have easy access to the debris in the drain.
Step 2: Pull the debris from the drain canal. After removing the stopper from your bathtub drain, you should be able to pull the hair and other debris out using a bent wire with a hook on the end. You can also use your fingers to remove debris, and you should wear gloves to avoid getting soap scum and bacteria on your hands.
Step 3: Finish the job. If your drain is still slow, or there is debris beyond what you can reach, you may use a bent wire, drain snake or auger to get the debris out. However, you should avoid pushing the debris further into the pipe, which can make the blockage worse.
