Home Plumbing Tip #1: Avoid using leave-in toilet cleaners. Most contain chlorine and other
harsh chemicals which, over time, will damage important components.
Try this instead: automatic toilet cleaner
Home Plumbing Tip #2: Sometimes mineral deposits will build up on a showerhead. To get rid of these, simply pour 1 cup of vinegar into a sandwich bag, and fill the rest up with water. Put the bag around the showerhead and wrap it up with electrical tape and let it stand overnight.
In the morning, remove the bag and wipe the minerals off with a damp towel.
Home Plumbing Tip #3: Leaks can be a hidden drag on your utility bill. To check your toilet for hidden leaks, simply add 6-10 drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If there are leaks, colored water will begin to appear in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes.
Home Plumbing Tip #4: Here’s a simply way to check for hidden leaks. Take a look at your water meter before you go to bed. Make sure not to use any water overnight. In the morning, check the meter again. If the reading has changed, then you have a leak that needs to be repaired.
Eco Tips
Eco Tip #1: Today’s Eco tip comes from the Rising Spoon. In this blog, Elaina tells us about 5 things that you should NEVER throw away. Instead, here are some creative ways to reuse, recycle, and re-purpose them.
Eco Tip #2: Now that the weather is warm(er), you’ll probably be spending more time outdoors. The problem is, there’s usually a lot of pests outside such as bees and wasps. Don’t reach for that can of chemical spray just yet! Try this instead. Stick 10 cloves into a lemon half and set them out at your next outdoor gathering. Wasp and bees hate the smell and will stay away.
Eco Tip #3: Ditch those store bought chemical cleaners and make your own instead!
1. To make an all-purpose cleaner, mix 1/2 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/2 gallon of water. This will clean pretty much any surface. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice into the mix to give it that fresh citrus smell.
2. Instead of using chemical air freshener sprays, try some Eco alternatives. Simmer water and cinnamon (or other spices) on the stove. Grind up a slice of lemon in the garbage disposal. Place some vinegar and lemon in a small dish, which will absorb odors from around the house.
These homemade multi-purpose Eco cleaners are better for your health, will save you money and are better for the environment.
